Hijra Bank is an interest free bank founded in Addis Ababa on January 16, 2021, after Ethiopia approved full Islamic banking. All of its savings, financing and payment products follow Sharia principles and are reviewed by a Sharia advisory committee of scholars. The bank started with more than 9,000 founding shareholders, many of them farmers, pastoralists and small traders, and runs a branch network along with mobile banking, USSD and the HalalPay digital payment service.
