Dallas

According to the history published by Debre Mihret Kidus Mikael, Ethiopians began settling in the Dallas Fort Worth area in the late 1970s. The first families worshipped at the Saint Seraphim Greek Orthodox church near downtown Dallas, held Bible study in Amharic in the early 1980s, hired their first full time priest in February 1991 and bought the first St. Michael’s church that September. The church, now a cathedral on North Jupiter Road in Garland, describes itself as the oldest and largest Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church in the area and the seat of the Archdiocese of Texas, and the St. Yared Spiritual Academy on its grounds opened in 2022 with 304 children enrolled.

Queen of Sheba, which calls itself one of the longest running Ethiopian restaurants in the Dallas area, opened in March 1991 near Uptown at McKinney and Lemmon Avenue and has been serving Ethiopian, Italian and vegan dishes in a strip center on Inwood Road in Addison since moving there (CraveDFW, July 2026; the restaurant). The Dallas Observer has called the area around Greenville Avenue and Forest Lane the epicenter of Ethiopian cooking in Dallas (Dallas Observer, 2013). Some older names are gone: Fasika on Shadybrook Lane and Ghion on Fair Oaks Avenue are now marked closed in this directory.
